Southern China’s Natural Treasures

Get a bird’s-eye view of stunning nature, ride a cliffside glass elevator, stand in a stone forest, see ancient towns and more.

About Your Trip

Pack your camera and get ready to capture the unforgettable natural wonders of southern China as you journey from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang. Start with two days in Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, experiencing several unique places within this UNESCO World Heritage site. At Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, you’ll ride the glass elevator built into a towering rock face. Hop a cable car at Yangjiajie Scenic Area, and then explore Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, with its immense stone pillars and forested valleys shrouded in fog. Tour some of the region’s best unspoiled sights such as the tranquil Golden Whip Stream and the breathtaking Ten-mile Natural Gallery. In Tianmen Mountain National Park, you’ll take another cable car ride. At the top, you can walk the glass skywalk, venture to Tianmen Cave and look over the hillside at a road that boasts 99 bends.

The next day, you’re in for a treat. See rock formations that look like trees at the Red Stone Forest National Geological Park. Stand amid these red carbonate geological formations dating hundreds of millions of years. Then, head to the Southern Great Wall of China near Fenghuang that was built during Ming dynasty for defensive purposes.

For your final tour, you’ll step into the past as you tour the well-preserved Phoenix Ancient Town in the Fenghuang area. It’s an excellent study of days gone by, having not changed much for 300 years. A boat ride on the Tuojiang River passes Diaojiaolou, a traditional style of housing with long wooden stilts that flank the shores of the tranquil river.

What we love:
• Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992 thanks to more than 3,000 striking sandstone pillars, natural bridges high above the valley floor, caves and other spectacular scenery.
• Get ready for thrills as you ride 1,099 feet (335 meters) on the side of a cliff on the Bailong Elevator. Also known as “Hundred Dragons Elevator,” it was officially named the world’s tallest outdoor elevator by Guinness World Records™ in 2015.
• What do you see when you look at the towering peaks found in the Ten-mile Natural Gallery? You may recognize interesting shapes such as “parents holding a son,” “old man collecting medicine” and “three sisters.”
• While in Zhangjiajie, spend an evening at “Zhangjiajie in Misty Rain,” a mesmerizing show known for its sound effects, water features, lighting, dancing and music.

Destination

Zhangjiajie is located in the northwestern corner of Hunan province in the People’s Republic of China. You can think of Zhangjiajie as China’s best-kept secret, largely untouched by man for thousands of years. The city’s recorded history dates back to 221 B.C., though humans have inhabited the region for more than 100,000 years. The diversity of flora and fauna coupled with awe-inspiring scenery draws millions of visitors to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park each year. In fact, the setting for James Cameron’s “Avatar” was inspired by Hallelujah Mountain, a 3,523-foot (1,074-meter) tall peak in the Yuanjiajie part of Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Area. Even locals describe the panoramic views as “beautiful beyond expression.”
